On Friday, October 5, over 400 students from R.N. Harris Elementary, Githens Middle School and Jordan High School filled Reynolds Industries Theatre at Duke University to see Gaspard & Dancers perform. The show marked the first school performance for the Durham-based company founded by Gaspard Louis a former dancer with Pilobolus Dance Theatre. Friday’s performance featured the world premiere “Around Within” and a Basquiat Trilogy inspired by Jean Michel Basquiat, the famous African American graffiti artist who crossed over into the international art gallery circuit with his unique style during the 1980’s Neo Expressionism art movement. Schools received study guides prior to the show to connect to visual art, dance, social studies and language arts curriculum. The show concluded with a question & answer session with the Louis and dancers. The special matinee performance was coordinated through the Durham Arts Council’s Creative Arts in Public & Private Schools (CAPS) program and made possible through generous support from the Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Foundation.
