Having toured internationally since 1979, Footworks brings a wealth of experience and skill to programming in North Carolina schools. The company is dedicated to teaching and working with youth and is recognized for over 35 years in Arts-In-Education. Founding Director Eileen Carson Schatz is an National Endowment for the Arts Choreography Fellow and a Certified Teaching Artist. Footworks remains true to traditional American music and percussive dance and presents connected roots and branches from many cultures. All of Footworks programming celebrates the cultural diversity found in the United States.

Performance
Keeping the Beat: Multicultural Influences in American Music and Dance

Footworks conveys the joy and illuminates the historical and multicultural perspectives of American music and dance. The program includes live music, American clogging, hamboning, Irish dance, African dance, audience participation (learning traditional rhythms), and more. Students will learn about the diversity/commonality of people in North Carolina and the world, the multicultural nature of our country, how sharing traditions created new traditions, and understand music and dance as an essential aspect of history and human experience.

Special Requirements (Space, Tech, Volunteer):
Can perform on any floor as long as it is not carpeted and is smooth with no uneven surfaces. A wooden performing surface is preferred if available. The ideal performance space is a minimum of 20′ wide by 10′ deep. A microphone on a stand connected to the PA system in the performance space is requested with access to the performance space 45 min. to 1 hour before the performance.

Roots and Rhythm: Exploring the Cultural Diversity of the United States Through Traditional Dance

This arts-integrated residency explores the diversity and commonality of the people of the United States. Dances and their histories from different cultures are taught in a fun and inviting way, bringing students together in rhythms and songs that build community and connect participants to each other and to their shared American heritage. Irish Roots and American Branches

Performing live Irish music and dance with their descendant American styles, Footworks illuminates the American story of traditions coming from the Old World and meeting others here, resulting in new traditions. Workshop
Roots and Rhythms

Footworks presents traditional music and dance in a way that makes participation accessible, fun, and encourages self-expression and heightens self esteem, where students feel safe exercising their own creativity. Residencies include percussive dance, singing, “hamboning”, and improvisational exercises. Footworks brings students together in a positive constructive way, building community and connecting participants to each other and their culture. Learning sequences develop motor and communication skills, teaching how to focus, follow directions, and work with others. Residencies are custom-designed to fit the needs of your school.
