Suzanne Beahrs is a dancer, teacher, and choreographer based in Durham, NC. With her company, Suzanne Beahrs Dance, she has shown work and performed at venues in NYC including Danspace Project, 92nd St Y, Judson Church, and Gibney Dance. She was called a “rising name” by the New York Times. Suzanne has taught at Dance New Amsterdam, Gibney Dance Center, Mark Morris Dance Center, and Dancewave in New York City. Locally, she has taught at ADF Scripps Studios, Ninth Street Dance, Carolina Dance Center, and Walltown Children’s Theater. She has been a guest teacher at North Carolina State University and Enloe High School. In Fall 2015 she will be adjunct dance faculty at Elon University. Suzanne received an MFA in Dance from NYU Tisch School of the Arts and a BA in Geology from UC Berkeley.

Students will learn about the history of modern dance in the USA and see a contemporary example. This lively dance performance about confidence is accompanied by text, classical music, and Rock and Roll. Students will be invited to rise and create their own movements to express who they are. The experience, “makes you think a lot about yourself, your life, and how much you’re trying to find who you are as a person.” – Student

Collaboration in Dance

Students will have the opportunity to make a modern dance based on a structure from Suzanne Beahrs Dance repertory and their own creative contributions. Students will build confidence, develop creativity, and collaborate with one another to create a culminating performance.

Confidence through Improvisation

Students will learn the basics of dance improvisation, including how to follow their impulses and respond to each other. Students will be introduced to moving and creating intuitively. We will collaborate to create a group structure for our dance.
