Julie russoJulie Zeidner Russo is a writer and artist. She is the publisher of the City Serene News Service. Her articles have appeared in national newspapers and science journals. Ms. Russo holds a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University and a bachelor of arts degree from the George Washington University. She is a former writer for the National Undersea Research Program. Since 2005, she has conducted more than 100 residencies and workshops using her literary and visual arts integrated lesson plans. Black Mountain Poets and Painters

Black Mountain College only existed for 24 years in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina from 1933 through 1957, and yet the progressive college exerted a profound influence on almost every aspect of American culture from literature and fine arts to science and mathematics. In this residency, students focus on the new American poets whose work serves as a foundation for the poetry we read and write today. The workshop combines contemporary literature, art making practices within a historic and modern context. The focus is on writing and art-making.

The Lost Generation in Paris

Gertrude Stein called them the “Lost Generation,” a group of writers including F.Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway living in Paris during the 1920s. In this integrated creative writing and arts workshop, students learn about the writers and painters who gathered in the salon of Gertrude Stein in Paris and their contributions to 20th century art. Students observe a visual presentation and lecture about the artists and writers, as well as receive representative literary and artistic works. The objective is to create poetry, journal writing and artwork inspired by the workshop.
