A StoryJourney: Culture in English & Spanish
With Bilingual Arts y Cultura con Kali (BACK), Kali Ferguson, Cultural Educator shares stories, dance and poetry from around the world! One bilingual StoryJourney performance usually includes three stories from throughout the African Diaspora and ends with a simple folk dance such as Sowu (a Ghanaian dance of life), Spanish Flamenco hands or Colombian Cumbia. Students learn inference, plot, characterization, patterns, imagery, sequence and sometimes science from her stories. They learn history, life values and Spanish phrases from her dances, which help them stretch and move before quieting down to join their teachers in learning once again. We always settle back in before ending the program!
One or more of these age-appropriate tales are told with Spanish words/phrases for use in everyday conversation. Students delight in finding the original countries of the folktales on Kali’s colorful map. They’ll chant, dance and act while connecting to Common Core and NC Essential Standards.
