Acting BugActing Bug unites theatre with North Carolina’s Standard Course of Study. As an elementary drama teacher for three years, Acting Bug founder Brandy Mazzella created a drama curriculum that integrated standards from science, language arts, and social studies. Brandy was selected as Teacher of the Year in 2007-08. After receiving a Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina, Brandy has been continuing theatre training in New York, Vancouver, and Atlanta. She recently completed a graduate course in Universal Design for Learning. Her specialty is collaborating with teachers to create a highly-engaging residency. Acting Bug: Hamlet Abridged

Hamlet Abridged edits the full-length play of Hamlet into a 50-minute performance that retains the essential relationships, plot structure, and famous monologues. For the last 10 minutes, the actors will open up the floor for a Talk Back session where the audience can ask questions about the performance, the play, or theatre generally.

Maximum Participants: 200

Duration: 60 minutes

Acting Bug: Moving through Science

Students will learn to use movement and voice to communicate ideas and feelings while simultaneously learning grade-appropriate science standards. Kindergarteners will use creative movement to learn about the seasons and the position and movement of organisms. First graders will use creative movement to learn the characteristics of various environments and behaviors of humans that enable plants and animals to survive. Third graders will use creative movement to understand how plants survive in their environments. Fourth graders will use creative movement to demonstrate an understanding of changes in the earth’s surface.

Maximum Participants: 30

Residency Fee: $87.50 per class/hr.

Acting Bug: Around the World In Five Days

Students will learn to use movement and voice to communicate ideas and feelings while simultaneously learning the elements of culture and using literature to understand diverse cultures. Grades K-2 will cover their respective N.C. Social Studies standards while bringing global stories to life. We will start at home with a story from the Native American canon. Next, we will venture to Africa and Asia. We end our travels in Mexico where each student creates a puppet to help perform our last story.

Special Requirements: Space for 30 students (maximum) to move around comfortably at the same time.
