Poetry Laboratory

In this fun, fast-paced writing workshop, students learn strategies to produce more detail in their writing. We use experimental poetry methods such as cut-ups and erasure, mine their memories for images and vocabulary, and work directly with tiny objects and vintage photographs to sharpen their description and observation. Poetry Laboratory is a gateway to personal expression, vocabulary expansion, and critical thinking. The workshop addresses literacy standards and can be customized to connect to social studies and science standards as well.

Maximum Participants: 30

Residency Fee: $250.00 per class/hr. Call CAPS office for details.

Grab Your Reader with Microfiction

Did you know that a grocery list or note slipped under your door can be chapters in a novel? That’s microfiction! For both enthusiastic and reluctant writers, microfiction is an entry point into larger writing structures. In this workshop, students write short multi-genre story fragments, combining them to form a larger coherent narrative with an unconventional structure. Students will make connections between grammatical and narrative structure and learn how to make and emotional impact upon a reader. We can write autobiography/nonfiction or fiction/fantasy in this workshop.

Special Requirements (Space, Tech, Volunteer): classroom (projector would be great but not essential)

Maximum Participants: 30

Mining Your Memory

You memory is full of rich, emotional detail. The writer’s challenge is in getting all that detail onto the paper. In this master class, we use fast-paced, stream-of-consciousness writing to delve deep into memory. Students learn strategies for interviewing themselves in the activity of writing in order to tease out more detail and critical thinking. They also learn editing habits to produce different, polished pieces of writing from that large, initial stream-of-consciousness mass. 60 – 90 minutes.
