Alex Weiss

Alex Weiss Composer, multi instrumentalist, music educator storyteller, and director for Different Drum, comes from Farockaway, a small coastal village on the edge of New York City. Alex played in the school bands and in several blues, and jazz/fusion bands before leaving home at age 20. Alex’s interest in other cultures and music genres led him to travels through the US, Latin America, Europe, The Middle East, North Africa, and Asia. Since 1987 Mr. Weiss has been offering residencies and performances with his multi cultural music throughout North Carolina, leading his Afro/Latin Ensemble Different Drum. BOOK ALEX WEISS

A Musical Journey of Three continents and several Islands!

” All aboard! Your passports please”. We are going to take you on a musical journey across three continents and several Islands. Our first stop is the Caribbean and the sounds of Calypso! – And so our performance begins traveling from place to place, sampling Samba from Brazil, music of the Andes, Guatemala and Cuba. Tracing the roots of the Cuban rhythms back to Africa. Our show also includes audience volunteers on percussion, and teaching how to dance the mambo.

Special Requirements (Space, Tech, Volunteer): 1 electrical outlet. 1 small table. bottled water. help loading and unloading is nice but not necessary.

Learning Popular Latin & Caribbean rhythms for hand drums & percussion

This workshop is for music teachers or high school music students. The goal is to teach and make accessible many of the popular rhythms of Latin America & The Caribbean. l Cumbia, samba, mambo, Afro Cubam 6/8, calypso, compas, and others will be taught on and drums and their accompanying percussion instruments. Instructor will also play traditional melodies giving context to the rhythms. These rhythms can also be used for new arrangements of popular songs or original compositions. 90 minutes.

Maximum Participants: 30

Special Requirements: Straight back armless chairs or short stools. Participants should bring their own drums. Instructor will have percussion instruments and a few extra congas.
