Karen Novy

Karen Novy is a Durham songwriter whose passion for communicating emotion and inspiring others through song is evident. Novy has a degree in K-12 Music Education and has been a performing songwriter for 30 years. At the age of 5, she began playing piano and soon after, created her first songs. Songwriting has taught Novy to express her valid, valuable emotions and that is something she imparts to youth and adults alike in her work. REQUEST KAREN NOVY

Building a Song, Telling Your Story

Karen Novy, songwriter/musician, guides students through the process of transforming thoughts and feelings into lyrics for their personal songs. Karen discusses the power of music to express emotion and delves into technical concepts of song form and melody. Residency Lesson Plan

Performance
Exploring Emotions Through Song

Karen Novy and Robert Cooney perform a 45-minute concert/presentation engaging audiences of all ages. This piano/guitar duo entertains while exploring emotions of the human experience and empowering in the audience the creativity that is inherent in all humans. 45 minutes. Performance Lesson Plan

15×10 foot space to set up musical equipment; we have a small PA for smaller spaces, larger auditoriums will need in-house PA system

Workshop
Songbuilding to Support Curriculum Concepts

Through the process of discussing the current topic of study in a classroom/group setting, students will communicate key concepts and brainstorm to create statements that we will then translate into song lyrics and song form. Workshop Lesson Plan

Duration: 75 minutes

Special Requirements: Music room or Classroom; Whiteboard/ blackboard and writing implements to document brainstorm session; Artist will provide: Bluetooth speaker; piano; Recording capability
