The Mallarmé Chamber Players, founded in 1984, are a flexible ensemble of professional musicians based in Durham, North Carolina, whose mission is to enrich the lives of their community through outstanding chamber music. The ensemble distinguishes itself by its innovative educational programs, its commitment to creative collaboration with other organizations, its creation of significant new work and its dedication to serve a diverse population. Mallarme’s current artistic director, Suzanne Rousso, previously served as Director of Education for the NC Symphony and was on the faculty of Eastern Music Festival for 8 years. Performance
Introduction to families of instruments: Sensational Strings; Wild Woodwinds, Brilliant Brass

This program is a basic introduction to 3 of the instrumental families; strings, woodwinds and brass. These are 3 separate concert offerings, performed independently from one another. Each concert will include 3 instrumentalists, a demonstration of each instrument, information about how the sound is produced, a history of the instruments and 4-5 short works that demonstrate the different elements, styles, eras and structures of music. Each concert will include an audience participation element.

Performance
Meet the Composer

This concert is best utilized after the Meet the Composer residency, however it can also stand on its own. A mixed trio (strings and winds) will perform works that represent different eras, styles and the elements of music. Composer Bo Newsome will demonstrate the process of creating a new work of music and talk about what inspires a composer. If also involved with the MTC residency, the works that each class wrote will be performed.

Residency
Meet the Composer Residency

How do composers come up with their ideas for new pieces? What elements do they work with and how do they use them to craft a brand new composition? With guidance from composer Bo Newsome, each class in the grade will become the composer in this interactive program. Mr. Newsome will use the elements of telling a story as the basis for the form of their musical composition. The residency culminates in a performance by a mixed trio who will perform each classes unique piece. *One session for each class in the grade plus concert for the whole grade

Maximum Participants: 30

Special Requirements: Whiteboard, markers, piano or keyboard (if available). We ask that the classroom teacher stay during the session.

Workshop
Instrumental Boot Camp

Mallarme will provide accomplished musician/teaching artist to work with specific instruments in your orchestra or band, in a workshop focused on playing technique. The instrumental groups are as follows: Violin/viola, Cello/bass, Flute/piccolo, Oboe, clarinet/bass clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone/tuba, percussion.45-75 minutes dependent on ages of the students.

Maximum Participants: 20

Special Requirements: A classroom with music stands, and whiteboard.

Workshop Fee$125.00 per class/hr.
