The Mallarmé Chamber Players, founded in 1984, are a flexible ensemble of professional musicians based in Durham, North Carolina, whose mission is to enrich the lives of their community through outstanding chamber music. The ensemble distinguishes itself by its innovative educational programs, its commitment to creative collaboration with other organizations, its creation of significant new work and its dedication to serve a diverse population. Mallarme’s current artistic director, Suzanne Rousso, previously served as Director of Education for the NC Symphony and was on the faculty of Eastern Music Festival for 8 years. Meet the Composer

How do composers write a piece of music? Students, with guidance from composer Bo Newsome, will compose a short piece in this fun, interactive program. Mr. Newsome will use the elements of telling a story as the basis for the form of a musical composition. Students will be asked to make decisions about the components of the piece. Mallarme players will perform the new work, demonstrate their instruments and perform other works that illustrate the various elements of music.

Special Requirements (Space, Tech, Volunteer):  Projector and screen, mic for narration, 3 chairs without arms.

Maximum Participants: 200

La Bella Cubana

Hear music with the distinctive style and rhythm of sunny Cuba, including the iconic Danzon – Cuba’s official dance! Students will hear a demonstration various percussion instruments (timbales, congas and guiro) and learn about Latin rhythms that originated in Cuba like the habanera and the Cha, cha, cha. The ensemble will consist of flute, violin, keyboard and percussion accompanied by a slide show of beautiful scenery and people of Cuba.

Special Requirements (Space, Tech, Volunteer): 12 x 12, requires 1 mics for speaking and one for singing. Projector and screen is desired. Access to electrical outlets.

Residency
Meet the Composer Residency

How do composers come up with their ideas for new pieces? What elements do they work with and how do they use them to craft a new composition? Each classroom, with guidance from composer Bo Newsome, will become a composer in this interactive program. Mr. Newsome will use the elements of storytelling as the basis for the form of a musical composition that each class will compose music collectively. Mallarme musicians will perform each classes composition in a culminating concert. Program needs: Whiteboard, piano or keyboard if available.

Maximum Participants: 30

Residency Fee$87.50 per class/hr.
