Usha Rajagopalan


Usha Raj has a MSW degree from the University of Maryland. The recipient of a Durham Arts Council Emerging Artist Grant Award and Kathryn Wallace Foundation Community Award. As a multi-disciplinary Teaching Artist, she shares the faith, culture and traditions of India for over two decades. A storyteller, puppet maker, and visual artist, showcasing India’s rich traditions. Usha shares this passion through creativity and the arts both nationally and internationally. She served as the first Hindu Chaplain at Duke University from 2011 to 2012. In 2017, she produced an acclaimed documentary film showcasing Indian immigrant life titled ‘Remarkable Journey.’ REQUEST USHA RAJAGOPALAN

Heroes from Around The World

What makes someone a hero-shero? Hear stories of heroes and super heroes from India. Learn about the culture, race, languages, and geography of India and compare literature from around the world through books, film, music, and discussion.
Experience the ancient Indian art forms of storytelling combined with scroll painting activity using vegetable dyes. Make your own scroll art and tell your story!

Special Requirements (Space, Tech, Volunteer): Media center or larger classroom. Microphone, White Board and projector access. Volunteer to assist with load-in.

Learning Math and Culture through Shopping in an Indian Bazaar!

Travel to India! Create and Shop in a Bazaar! Look at numbers, shapes, and money. Buy spices, silks, and much more. Use the math skills learned to get the most out of your shopping experience. Everyone will leave the session loving and embracing math!

Workshop
Rangoli Art! Demo Workshop or Residency

Students will view clip of the film demonstrating the process of making Rangoli art. The artist will create Rangoli art made from rice flour/color and sand art. *Residency will include drawing Rangoli patterns and students trying their own Rangoli art designs.
