Students learn about different types of stories such as tall tales and fairy tales while gaining a deeper understanding of literary concepts such as characters and mood.

Residency
Theatrical Performance

Students work on teams to create performances, beginning with character development and storytelling. The fundamentals of acting are taught and students use critical thinking and collaboration to rehearse. Typically, students create short scenes, monologues and even poems or songs around a specific theme, ensuring that student has a sizable role. This residency offers a hands-on approach to English Language Curriculum such as establishing a logical sequence of events and using creative language. Students conclude with a final performance for their class, school or community.

Special Requirements (Space, Tech, Volunteer): We simply need an appropriate space for students to write and enough room for students to move around comfortably while they are rehearsing and performing. If the sponsoring school would like students to be able to perform for other classes or for the school, a place with appropriate seating should be provided. We have no technical needs or material needs for this residency.

Maximum Participants: 40
Minimum Days Needed for Residency: 5

Residency Fee: $168.75 per class/hr.

Residency
Folktale Playwriting

We pack an enormous amount of curriculum into this class, focusing on storytelling and sequencing of events. We teach the cultural significance of folktales, develop writing skills and offer students the opportunity to perform. This residency inspires growth in many students: students with disabilities can work in a positive environment, outgoing students love to perform, reserved students can express themselves safely, and ESL students have fun while practicing English.

We offer two additional versions of this residency: Poetry and Songwriting and Literature in the News.

Special Requirements: We have no technical or volunteer requirements. In terms of space, we simply need enough space for students to move and rehearse comfortably and hard surfaces available so students can write.

Maximum Participants: 40
Minimum Days Needed for Residency: 5

Residency Fee: $168.75 per class/hr.

Workshop
Attic Salt Writing Workshop OR Theatrical Performance Workshop

Attic Salt Writing Workshop– Our most popular writing workshops are Folktale Play Writing and Poetry and Songwriting, but we are open to specific requests based on other themes or genres. These workshops can be conducted in combination with one of our performances, or we can bring a series of workshops to a school.

The basis of our writing workshops includes learning about the cultural significance of genre being explored in the workshop. Students then have an opportunity to compose miniature pieces which they can perform for the class.

Theatrical Performance Workshop– Students receive a crash course in the fundamentals of acting including character development and using their voice and body to portray different characters. The majority of this work is done through theatre games and activities. Then students are given time to write short scenes, monologues or songs to share with the group. This workshop provides a fast-paced, hands-on approach to theatre and language arts.

We can tailor our workshops to a specific purpose. For example, focusing only on acting, or on a certain writing skill.
